Have you ever tried to recreate the food you ate during your travels once you get home? We do it all the time! Sometimes successfully, sometimes not so much. 😊 This tomato appetizer with a Barcelonian twist is definitely a winner!
As we’ve mentioned in the previous post “Our Top 10 Places to Visit in Barcelona”, we had finally found our “perfect” tomato at La Boqueria market. However, once back in our hotel room, we realized that we didn’t have any salt, or even a knife. We figured our bartender might have both and made a B-line to the rooftop lounge.
Luckily for us, the place was pretty empty — just the bartender cleaning glasses, and one other couple sipping their cocktails on the far end of the balcony. So, with tomato in hand, we explained our problem to him, and the whole reason why we were doing it. He chuckled and said, “Wait here for a second. I’ll be right back! ” A few minutes later, he came back with a bottle of Worcestershire sauce, olive oil and a lime. He then began preparing our tomato as if he had done it a million times before.
It tasted like a deconstructed virgin Bloody Mary! Fresh and tangy lime juice brought out the taste of tomatoes and the deep rich taste of the Worcestershire sauce added warmth to the whole dish! Once we’ve tried them prepared this way, we were instantly hooked.
Tomato Appetizer with Barcelonian Twist Recipe
(level — easy, prep time — 5 min)
Ingredients:
- 1-2 great tomatoes. (TIP: To find a semi-useful tomato for this recipe, do not be afraid to pick it up and smell it. It should smell like a tomato. If it doesn’t smell at all, it’s not going to taste much either. If you are not sure how the tomato should smell like, try growing one plant at home, and once you harvest some fresh ones from a vine, you’ll know!)
- Olive oil (a tablespoon or so)
- Worcestershire sauce (half a tablespoon)
- Juice of ½ lime
- Salt (we love the Himalayan pink salt, or Hawaiian black lava salt for this recipe)
Preparation:
- Slice the tomatoes and arrange them on a plate in one layer in a desired configuration.
- Drizzle the olive oil over tomatoes (you don’t want them to be drenched in it)
- Drizzle the Worcestershire sauce across the slices
- Squeeze half a lime on the tomato slices
- Sprinkle with salt. (Tomatoes love salt, so make sure you got a bit on each slice)
- Adjust ingredients to your personal taste.
Ta-da! You are done! Works great as an appetizer or a side dish. It works really well with Chorizo Al Vino and Beans a la Catalana tapas! Try it at home, and let us know what you think!
